Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN)
AOAC INTERNATIONAL has formed an AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN). Funding for this effort is made available through the International Formula Council on behalf of Abbott Nutrition, Danone, Fonterra, Mead Johnson, Nestle, PBM Nutritionals, and Pfizer. This panel has been established to develop standard method performance requirements (SMPR) for twenty (20) or more priority nutrients in infant formula and adult nutritionals over a period of 2.5 years. In addition, AOAC will be identifying analytical method or method(s) suitable for validation studies for each SMPR.
In an effort to gain global acceptance, stakeholder panels are made up of key experts from global government, industry, academia, and contract research organizations. Through stakeholder involvement, standard method performance requirements have been established by AOAC for varied uses, from homeland security to food safety.
During the first meeting, AOAC established assignments for the 1st Five Nutrients in the form of working groups. These working groups are very important as they will develop the standard method performance requirements and choose candidate methods for the selected nutrients.
Please read the recent article published in our magazine, Inside Laboratory Management titled "Establishing Standard Method Performance Requirements for Infant and Adult Nutritionals" that describes the project in more detail.
